There is a wide range of climatic zones in Chile
from the arid desert in the North to the lush, irrigated river valleys
of the central area, to the cooler southern region.
Chile has a multitude of micro-climates that are
related to the massive Andes mountain range on the East, the cool
Pacific Ocean on the West and the river valleys with large expanses
of irrigated, fertile land.
Chile ranks third in South America for floricultural
production behind Colombia and Ecuador. Chile grows a wide range
of cut flower crops: carnations, roses, chrysanthemums, lilies,
liatris, alstroemerias, lisianthus, limonium, statice and gypsophilia.
Bulbs crops such as liatris, lilies and tulips are mainly produced
in the southern region and are of considerable interest to world
market growers as an alternate source for both, forcing bulbs and
finished cut flowers.
