Since early colonial times, Chileans have developed
a passion and a love for horses. During the mid XIXth century, wealthy
Chilean families imported the best bloodstock from England, Ireland
and France and later from Kentucky. Over the years, breeding of
thoroughbred racehorses has become an important job providing industry
and a source of income for approximately 7000 families.
Chilean horses -such as Cougar, Infinidad, Puerto
Madero, Memo, Total Impact and Wild Spirit- have won or placed in
important classics in the US and also in Dubai. The races from the
Breeders Cup have been a model for the improvement of the Chilean
racing industry.
Our jockeys have had their share of glory including
the top participation of Jose Santos. A Chilean jockey was in the
saddle on an American horse —Funny Cide— to win the
2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness stakes.
We organize special trips to visit breeding farms
where horse enthusiasts can see the best bloodlines of world renowned
sires such as Mr. Prospector or Northern Dancer. Likewise, spending
an afternoon at the races to bet a dollar or two is always an exciting
experience amidst the euphoric atmosphere of the crowd, as well
as being a plesurable way to admire the architecture of grand edifices
in Santiago such as the Club Hípico de Santiago and the Hipódromo
Chile, as well as the Valparaíso Sporting Club in Viña
del Mar.
