Although Chile does not have a comparatively large number of wildlife species, there are a few that do call the attention of scientists and animal lovers.

In the Altiplano –High Platea– we find the South American camelids, with the domestic alpacas and llamas and the wild guanacos and vicuñas. Birds are the giant coot, the flamingos and the Andean geese. In the rain forests of the South the “Pudu”, the smallest deer in the world and the unique marsupial, the “monito del monte” are good targets for research. Needless to say, that the condor, the albatross, cormorants and the penguins –in their 17 different varieties – provide the attraction of the sea birds.

Wildlife in Chile has the additional flavour of the scenic panorama of the Andes; the Pacific and Patagonia.

There is not an overwhelming variety of wild life in Chile. Nevertheless, visitors can find unique species of very unlikely and spectacular nature.

In the high plateaux of the North —the Altiplano— the presence of herds of South American camelids is a great experience in the altitudes of the Andes. The domestic alpacas and llamas, together with the Aymara herdsmenwill always be attractive to inquisitive minds. Next to them, their wild cousins —vicuñas and guanacos— complete the essence of immeasurable fascination.

The "pudu" is the smallest deer in the world and is found in the amazing rain forests of the Southern Patagonia. Likewise, the "monito del monte", the smallest known marsupial in the world, is rarely seen in the same habitat and little is known about his survival. Needless to say, colonies of different groups of penguins are found all along the Chilean coast of the Pacific, all the way down to Antarctica.

Penguin Colonies in Chile

Of the14 different species of penguins in existence, 7 of them can be found in various parts of Chile stretching from the northern coasts to Antarctica.

a) Algarrobo: Isla Pájaro Niño
b) Chiloe: Puñihuil
c) Magallanes: Isla Magdalena

Birds are also a special attraction when it comes to native species such as the Chilean flamingo; Giant Coot; Perdiz;

Clients have to make sure that the handling of the logistics be the correct one. Otherwise, there will be loss of time and some unpleasant encounters with altitude sickness.
